Perimenopause and menopause

When the body changes, how can we support it?

A woman’s life is not linear. It is shaped by cycles, transitions and transformations. Some of these phases are still rarely talked about — perimenopause and menopause among them.

At Aime, we believe that better understanding the body helps women experience this transition with greater calm, comfort and confidence. There are gentle, effective ways to support this period, at your own pace.

Perimenopause and menopause: what are we really talking about?

Perimenopause is the hormonal transition phase that precedes menopause. It can begin from the age of 40 (sometimes earlier) and may last several years. During this time, oestrogen levels fluctuate significantly, which can lead to irregular cycles, sleep disturbances, increased fatigue, mood swings and early skin changes.

Menopause is medically defined after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. It marks the end of the reproductive phase, but not the end of hormonal balance. Symptoms may persist or evolve: hot flushes and night sweats, skin and intimate dryness, reduced energy, difficulty concentrating…

Expert insight

“Perimenopause is a window of opportunity. It is the ideal time to establish protective habits that will make a real difference ten or twenty years later. Adapting your lifestyle does not mean restricting yourself — it means understanding your body, anticipating change and regaining control of your long-term health trajectory. Menopause is not an ending. It is a transition that requires a strategy. And prevention, in women’s health, is a form of empowerment.”

Collagen: a key support during perimenopause and menopause

With the decline in oestrogen levels, the body’s natural collagen production decreases significantly. Yet collagen is a structural protein that plays a role far beyond the skin.

During perimenopause and menopause, its importance becomes particularly strategic:

  • Bone health support: collagen makes up a significant part of the bone matrix. Its decline weakens bones and contributes to the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
  • Joint and tissue preservation: it supports joint flexibility and comfort of movement, often challenged during this period.
  • Skin quality: less collagen means thinner, drier and less firm skin.

Targeted supplementation with hydrolysed marine collagen can therefore help support the body through these profound structural changes.

    Expert perspectives

How can early perimenopause symptoms be recognised?

Symptoms vary from one woman to another. The most common signs are changes in menstrual cycles. Periods may become more frequent at first, then irregular and more spaced out.

Hot flushes are often the most noticeable warning sign, along with night sweats. Sleep and mood disturbances are also common, as well as a decrease in libido.

How long do these symptoms last before menopause begins?

The median age for the onset of perimenopause is around 47, while the average age of menopause is 51. However, there is significant individual variability. Duration is influenced by factors such as the age at which cycle disturbances begin, ethnicity and body mass index.

The median duration is around four years, but it may last up to eight years for some women.

Why is it important to reassess lifestyle during this phase? What are the first steps to take?

Perimenopause is a key period for prevention, during which the body’s adaptive capacity remains high. Hormonal fluctuations influence blood sugar regulation, low-grade inflammation, stress response, sleep and neuro-emotional balance. An unsuitable lifestyle can amplify these imbalances and contribute to the persistence of symptoms.

Key levers include a nutrient-dense diet providing adequate protein, fibre, micronutrients and quality fats, while limiting glycaemic fluctuations. Respecting biological rhythms and prioritising sleep quality are essential for proper hormonal axis function. Managing chronic stress is crucial, as it directly affects the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. Finally, regular physical activity, including strength training, supports lean mass, insulin sensitivity and overall metabolic health.

Why are food supplements important in supporting perimenopause and menopause — and specifically M-Balance+?

During perimenopause and menopause, micronutrient and functional needs evolve, while physiological adaptation systems are more heavily solicited. In this context, food supplements can offer targeted support, provided they are rigorously formulated and integrated into a holistic approach.

Magnesium, combined with vitamin B6, contributes to normal nervous system function, reduced fatigue and the regulation of hormonal activity. Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic plant, supports the body’s stress response and helps maintain neuroendocrine balance. Saffron has documented benefits for emotional balance and mood, which are often affected by hormonal fluctuations. Wild yam, traditionally used to support feminine comfort, fits into a gentle hormonal support approach that is particularly relevant during transition phases.

A supplement such as M-Balance+ therefore fits into a physiological support strategy aimed at reinforcing the body’s adaptive capacity in the face of hormonal fluctuations — not as a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, but as a way to strengthen the body’s natural regulatory mechanisms.
